Standing Biceps Curl

Standing Biceps Curl
Muscle group: Arms
Sport: Powerlifting
The standing biceps curl is a classic arm isolation exercise: standing with a barbell or dumbbells held at the thighs, you curl the weight up by bending the elbows while keeping the upper arms still, then lower it back down with control. It targets the biceps brachii, with the shoulders and wrists kept stable throughout the movement. A barbell, EZ-bar, or a pair of dumbbells can all be used. It's typically used as light accessory work rather than a competition lift.

Technique: standing with a neutral spine and the weight held at the thighs, the elbows stay close to the torso and essentially fixed in place while the forearms curl the weight up toward the shoulders, then lower it back down under control through the full range of motion.

Common technical errors: swinging the torso or using the hips to help lift the weight (momentum rather than the biceps doing the work); letting the elbows drift forward as the weight gets heavier; only completing a partial range of motion at the top or bottom; and lowering the weight quickly instead of controlling the eccentric phase.
